Converging Territories

Those interested in residential accommodation must sign in before 1 April 2010 through an electronic application which is available here and send it to the address: secretariat@efap-fepa.eu and a copy to cimbal@ccea.cz and vasourkova@ccea.cz.
Application will consist of the following elements:
-    CV, copies of identification papers and diploma(s);
-    A cover letter (3000 characters max.)
-    A presentation of realized or in progress projects and/or submissions to competitions (15 pages maximum);
-    A signed authorisation including the free transfer of rights to EFAP, for internet or paper advertisement and publishing purpose (Converging Territories leaflet).

Selected teams will receive a grant worth € 9000 to cover labor costs + travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.
The maximum length of residential stay is 6 months.
The event is designed for practicing architects, having already completed projects, architects are actively participating in competitions, authors of books and other publications and workshops organizers.

Prague
Inner edges

The city core of Prague is famous for its picturesque buildings of all styles, crooked streets and charming alleys, where you can discover and experience a unique genius loci. On the the other hand,
the border of this historical area is very often hard to access and helps to build the Disneyland image of the city center. Historical core thus works as an isolated, conserved island, a tourist attraction cut off from the entire city. This separation is not mental, but it is very often followed by various physical obstacles,
infrastructural corridors - the heritage of the past.

Could this situation be changed by architectural interventions? How could we redefine architectural, infrastructural and public domains at the border between the core and its closest neighborhoods?

Proposals should use the Prague condition as a ground for solution, but at the same time they should focus on the contemporary understanding of the common spaces.

Dublin
Shadowland

The current economic crisis bequeathed a legacy of half finished projects, undeveloped lands in inappropriate locations and ghost estates, complete but unoccupied. Alternative development proposals are required or the same models tweaked to reflect reduced 'market expectations' will be trotted out as solutions. The Dublin proposal is to seek alternative options for dealing with this legacy and reset the paradigm of development in a way that is more
holistic, integrated, flexible, local and intuitive. Proposals, that are
focused as much on Social and Environmental as on Economic Sustainability.
The location is the greater Dublin area in particular the edges and
hinterland of Dublin.

Paris
Paris 10th district is open to Europe thanks to two train stations, Gare du Nord and Gare de l¹Est. A large-scale consultation will soon take place on the new development of this area. This true European territory is a popular place where business men in a hurry and the socially excluded meet. This cohabitation, tolerated so far, will certainly disappear with the reshuffle of spaces around the stations, which also constitute the beginning of large, Haussmann-style avenues. The aim is to reorganize car and pedestrian circulation, station squares, the start of Magenta and Strasbourg boulevards, to transform bus stations, to create a green area next to the Gare de l’Est. In short, this plan will induce a true revolution for the district in the coming years, including controversies. The applicant will enter the battlefield alongside experts, users, decision-makers, urban planners and architects, and will take part to public debates. This residence proposes an immersion within the core of a district, reflecting on real community needs. The applicant will not deal with all issues, but will define his/her own field of action.

Heated Archetypes

Exhibition of young Slovak artist, finalists of Jindřich Chalupecký 2009 Award, Tomáš Džadoň. The installations in their mixes elements of folk architecture, socialist modernism and contemporary times. Linking elements in unexpected combinations creates an absurd collages often spatially disorienting the viewer.

First Urbanity workshop, based on comparative analysis, should bring us to the understanding how to read contemporary cities, and to look for the relevant approach. During projective part we will focus on issues as: what does the city represent today, what is the role of the capital in today Europe, what is the relation between Central European capitals etc. Through the project we will look for the proposals that will step by step lead us to future perspectives of the Central European Capitals.

change in last 50 years. Conceptions of the exhibition consciously
refuse the strategy of presenting architecture in a form of successful
realizations, professionally polished photos, visualizations and
projections. The focus of attentions is the architects personality: his
approach, notions and opinions on creation process, situation in the
business and conditions in which he creates the architecture. Recording
the authentic enunciations of architects the authors of the project try
to build the base of oral history of Czech architecture from 1970´s to
the present.

The exhibition Generation+ was introduced as a part
of the event ARCHICZECH, a festival taking place within the Czech presidency of the European Union 2009 in Berlin.

City Visions Europe European Exchange Program, 2008-2010 Bordeaux – Kosice – Mechelen – Pilsen

The 18-month program City Visions Europe, running from autumn 2008 to spring 2010, is focused on the role of architectural speculations in relation to evolution of the European city. It will provoke public debate on the future of four distinct European cities: Kosice (Slovakia), Bordeaux (France), Mechelen (Belgium) and Pilsen (Czech Republic). All four cities have been candidates to become European Capital of Culture, a rotating title that highlights the cultural program of a European city during an entire year to stimulate the structural and sustainable development of the city. In light of the tendency towards a generic and global architecture for generic and global cities, City Visions Europe focuses on the specific question of the European city.

Eight architectural practices, under the direction of Centre for Architectural Research & Development 's design research team, will develop perspectives for the four concerned cities, while exchanging with local and international experts, policy makers and citizens through a series of workshops. These propositions will be presented to a professional audience, as well as the general public, during a series of city-wide events in all four cities to take place at the end of 2009. This will be followed a series of public presentations and roundtable discussion aimed at provoking both a local and international debate about these cities and the European city in general. The program will be realized in collaboration with Arc-en-Rêve Centre d'Architecture in Bordeaux, France; the Flemish Architecture Institute in Antwerp, Belgium; MMMechelen vzw in Mechelen, Belgium; and the Centre for Central European Architecture in Prague, Czech Republic.

Project reacts to the radical changes in a city landscape over the last twenty years. Architects, culture managers, sociologists, artists and other experts from seven European capitals critically react to the globalization of urban space as a form of the new European totality. Connecting the Central European capitals the project creates critical platform for the reflection of contemporary situation of urban space and for formulation of its future perspectives. Today, twenty years after the revolutions, when we joined the way of democracy and capitalism, comes the right time to review the development of cities and life space in terms of “new” Europe.

Big Deal – In Search for a “Great Commission”

The multimedia Big Deal project introduces the young generation of architects from the Czech Republic and their breakthrough contracts. The composition of participating studios unveils the diversity of domestic scene and distorts the stereotype picture of the linear Czech architecture development.

Young Blood Export – 2nd Debate

What does motivate an architect to make public education of his profession? How is it possible to present the architecture? And why? Invited architects participating on the Young Blood project represented several possibilities how “to make” the presentation under the central European conditions. Second meeting of Young Blood Export about the theme presentation of the architect is a response to the claim of Hans Ibelings, editor in chief of the magazine A10, which has been expressed during the pilot discussion from the cycle Young Blood Export – 1st Debate – Central European Positions in Architekturzentrum Wien (May 15, 2007) about the incapability and low efficiency of young Central European architects to present themselves and their profession in relation to the public.

Young Blood Export – Slip-Slop

Mapping the youngest architectonic scene in the region of Central Europe, which took place in 2003–2007 within the project Young Blood, led to the object called Young Blood Export, accompanied by discussions and lectures. The space object is actually a compression of twelve installations from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Austria. They respond to various questions of the existence of national forms of architecture in particular states of the region, as well as questions of possible interpretations of relationships between given states with post-communist tradition and new global partner from the West. Central European identity does not dogmatically act in the project, there is no nostalgic allusion. It is the platform for defining the space, in which we live and create. Author of the Slip-Slop object is Michal Moravčík, Slovak visual artist.

Start Architecture – lecture cycle
A cycle focused on observing approaches to architectonic education at high schools not only in Czech Republic and to evaluation of actual situation in the field, was finished in academic year 2006/2007 with a lecture given by Ján Stempel and Ondřej Beneš, two architects. They lead in this time for second year an architectonic atelier at FA CTU in Prague. Ján Stempel worked for studio SIAL in Liberec. In 1991 he co-found architectonic office A.D.N.S. where he functioned till 2004. Recently he intend to his practice in his own atelier and to teaching architecture (www.stempel.cz). Young Blood EXPORT

CCEA initiated a set of six exhibitions accompanied by lectures and discussions in 2003. Under the Young Blood title, Czech, Slovenian, Slovakian, Polish, Hungarian and Austrian representatives of young architectonic scene were subsequently presented. Young Blood Export exhibition presents a selection of twelve installations. These are meant as reactions of the authors – architectonic studios, to the “I’m a Young Czeck, Slowak, Sloven, Pollish, Hungerian, Austerian Architect!” statement, placed in the space of 3.6 m³. The name of each country is deliberately misspelled. Installations of participating studios contain original interpretations of this mistake. An installation could hence express the studio’s attitude to the current situation on the young domestic architectural scene. Aim of the project was also to invoke the discussion about the existence or absence of a specific “national" Architectonic opinion in the individual countries. All this, in the age of the worldwide confrontation with the globalization. The dozen of exhibits is the essence not only of young Central European architectonic scene. It also brings opinions of groups, labels and free groupings who search for their place and identity in the globalized Europe. Young Blood Export project was presented for the first time in the Austrian Architekturzentrum Wien-West.

Portfolios presentation of exhibiting teams took place during the opening.

I’m a Young “Austerian“ Architect!

The Young Blood cycle targeting the production and opinions of a new generation of architects working in central European area – Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Austria – culminated with an exhibition of eight installations of young Austrian studios, based on eight terse slogans, qualifying eight different approaches to architecture. After Prague premiere in CCEA (June 9 – July 31, 2006) the exhibition was presented in Austrian Graz (Novemeber 9 – December 3, 2006) and continued its voyage to Vienna. The exhibition I´m a Young “Austerian” Architect! opened a new part of Architekturzentrum Wien – Architekturzentrum Wien-West (April 18, 2007).

EUROFLAG

2META association has been representing young Rumanian art scene since 1998. Its founding was initiated by two visual artists, Marie Manolescu and Romelo Pervolovici as part of an independent cultural organization Meta Cultural Foundation from Bukurest. The EUROFLAG project originated in 2005. The authors treat the familiar symbol of the EU through it. As a reaction to the coming integration of Rumania into the EU at that time, they deliberately deformed it – the symbol of star is not a mere embodiment of solidarity and integration; it is also an expression of violence, worries, unrest and the reality of post-communist Europe.

Architecture and Media

What condition are specialized architectural media in? What is their overlap into mass media? What image of architecture do Czech social media produce? Do they help promote architecture or rather do harm to it? What is the media image of the profession of architect itself? Should contact with the media be an integral part of architectural work? Since 2006 ERA21, a magazine on architecture, has been organizing a series of public debates about architecture and architectural work in the Czech Republic. A Round Table II on the theme of Architecture and Media was co-initiated by the CCEA.

BeneLon

The project developed gradually starting in 2004 as an author concept by the Agents group who follow other than traditional approaches in presenting architecture. The word BeneLon stands for a virtual analogy to an urban organism where fragments of two milieus known by authors blend together: Ben-ešov and Lon-don.

Be a Bloody Idealist!

Opening of the sixth and final exhibition from the Young Blood cycle – I´m a Young “Austerian“ Architect! – in Prague residency of CCEA was appended by an action of Austrian studio x architekten, who spoke to young architects with an appeal “donate your young blood!”. The donators of the blood appointed in mobile transfusion center of Central Military Hospital just before the entrance to CCEA.

15 Years Transit

A view of architecture from an unexpected angle of two cameras fixed on a motorcycle helmet. Authors of the project, Enikö Orsz and Erika Katalina Pásztor, pass through selected buildings in Budapest and talk with their constructors who beside work also reflect their private life. 15 Years Tranzit video installation conveys a live quality insight into local architectural world: 3 large-screen displays, 13 projectors, 27 architects, 1 video installation, 70 minutes.

Architects in RSTS. Dialogue of Contemporary Living – exhibition and lecture cycle
Project based on a principle of communication between architects and the general public. Its aim is to present the architecture to an ordinary client: show him what possibilities are there and start a dialogue about contemporary living not only in Czech Republic. Within the frame of the project there were realized 3 exhibitions of actual flat production in Czech area – Family Houses, Housing Projects, Reconstructions, Extensions, Superstructures – and a series of six lectures and discussions with the best Austrian architects. The second lecture of the cycle was given by Christopher Schweiger, one of the founders of Vienna atelier Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (www.deluganmeissl.at).

Family Houses

Within the frame of the project there were realized 3 exhibitions of actual flat production in Czech area – Family Houses, Housing Projects, Reconstructions, Extensions, Superstructures – and a series of six lectures and discussions with the best Austrian architects. The exhibition cycle was opened with a presentation of 15 family houses in Czech area.

I’m a Young “Sloven” Architect!

The third exhibition from a Young Blood cycle targeting the production and opinions of a new generation of architects working in central European area – Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Austria – presented installations of seven Slovene young studios. After the premiere of the exhibition in City Museum in Ljubljana (September 8 – September 28, 2005) the exhibition moved to Prague.

Moonlighting

The project follows young architects who work for renowned architectural studios but concurrently purse their own activities. They seek to win recognition through architectural competitions and small realizations. Moonlighting was initiated by BokA, an association of architects from Brno. The CCEA broadened the project presenting work by a larger generation spectre of architects from Prague, Brno, Liberec and České Budějovice.

Architecture for Diplomacy

What functions should an embassy perform in 21st century? In what ways are these functions possible to be traced in architecture? The Czech Centre in London initiated a project called Architecture for Diplomacy in 2004. Not only architects and diplomats but also the general public were able to express their opinion on the theme of embassies through the internet. Embassy of the Czech Republic in London then hosted a panel discussion as part of Architecture Week 2004 which was also possible to watch as a satellite broadcast at the CCEA in Prague.

Disconnected. Connected! 2005: Architecture and Commercial Photography

The cycle focuses on comparison viewpoints of young generation of architects in Czech Republic and connection with other art fields. The aim of the project is to enforce of attractive and comprehensible forms of presentation of architecture to the general public using different media. We have been made certain that design of interiors as presented in contemporary magazines, interiors put together from fragments by various designers, interiors with no character or soul, are no answer. Is it right to implant clients with an author architectural opinion on the style of their privacy that is often influenced by fashion trends and does not work with clients’ ideas and needs? Tereza Janečková and Pavlína Míčová grasp the theme of home / interior / personal history.

Archiprix, Archiprix International

Archiprix is a show of final theses by Dutch schools of architecture with rich history. The first year was announced in 1979 and it has been organized annually ever since. The exhibition at the CCEA was arranged in cooperation with the Archiprix Foundation and HunterDouglas company. The aim was not only to present a review of Archiprix in the Czech Republic but especially to acquaint students working on their final theses with the possibility of taking part in the international exhibition Archiprix International.

Architect versus Designer happening

During the Design Days in Prague Designblok ?04 CCEA prepared a project Architect versus Designer. The exhibition searched an answer for recently often discussed question: if and how we can compare professions, they “compete“ with each other in many ways. How close are their relations? How are they connected? Do they respect each other? Do they induce or negate each other?

Architectonical atelier Vpřed and design studio Takako were asked by the curator Jana Kostelecká to design an interior, everyday store, whose look is mostly overlooked. We know many design stores with clothes, shoes, flowers, furniture or living accessories. However don?t we visit just the butchery more often?

Czech Republic and Me

How to present the Czech Republic as a country of 21st century? Should it be a promotion of renowned personalities, products, buildings, landmarks or cultural values and traditions? The theme of presenting the Czech Republic was tackled by students of graphic design as part of a competition “Czech Republic and Me” organized by the Czech Centres before the Czech Republic joined the EU. The exhibition summing up results of the competition took up activities of the first exhibition premises of the CCEA. Even though it was not an architectural theme, our aim was to indicate overlaps between various art fields which – similarly to architecture – are impossible to be perceived in isolation.
